Internship Job Title: Sports & Recreation Volunteer Supervisor: Sports & Recreation Director/Branch Director Revision Date: January 2026 Potential Start Date: May 1, 2026 Potential End Date: May 31, 2026 Total Hours: 30 hours (10 hours per week for 3 weeks) Typical Schedule: TBD with Branch Director POSITION SUMMARY: The Sports & Recreation Volunteer will work within our Sports program at the West Suburban YMCA, alongside our Sports leadership staff. During the internship, the Sports & Recreation volunteer will gain exposure to the basic inner workings of the sports department. Your time spent learning how the Sports Department operates will build skill sets and experience to further set you up for your future! Tasks and projects include: • Help assist our sports instructors with teaching instructional sport programs, learn how to build engaging lessons plans • Assists our lead counselors in helping make schedules and running a day of our sports camp- during vacation days/weeks (if appropriate) • Coach one of our YBA (youth basketball league) teams- (7-week program) • Coach one of our YSA (youth soccer league) teams- (7-week program) • Helping officiate our youth sport leagues • Organization and taking inventory of sports equipment • Other relevant tasks as assigned by supervisor SKILLS ACQUIRED: We hope to build valuable skillsets during your time at the West Suburban YMCA, which will help build your work experience and resume. These skills include, but are not limited to: Teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, adaptability, communication skills, time management (planning/prioritizing), software/systems education, project management and building your network. Declared major/minor within the parks & recreation leisure services, physical education or related field of study or other related degree, with an approved educational institution. 2. Experience with recreation programming. 3. Ability to apply in practice the knowledge and skills acquired in the academic setting 4. Previously played team sports. 5. Basic working knowledge of computer and a willingness to learn new technology. 6. Commitment to consistent, agreed upon schedule. 7. Team player. 8. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Ability to bend, squat, run, climb stairs, and lift up to 25 lbs.
